HOW TO: office 2003 and office 2007 on the same computer!

Note: Tested on XP, please report in comments about Vista! Thanks

PROBLEM:

If you have installed office2003 and office2007 on the same computer you probably get the dialogs below every time they switch between Word 2007 and Word 2003.

SOLUTION:

The fix to the problem is very simple as it turns out - simply run the following commands (by pressing the Windows Key+R or typing it into the Start/Run command box.  Use the line with Office\11.0 if you have Office 2003 installed and Office\12.0 if you have Office 2007 installed.  You can use both if you have both installed :

reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1

reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Options /v NoReReg /t REG_DWORD /d 1

That is it.  Office 2007 might want to have one more spin round the block with it's configuration dialog box, but that should be it.

  1. This only works if you have one version or the other. It does not work when you have both.

I run a student computer lab with both versions on our systems. That way students have a choice of which version of Office to use, depending on what they are more comfortable with. When I set 2007 with the tip it works great until I launch the 2003 version. The system resets the key back to 0 on the 2007 version.

  2. This works on my laptop, I posted only after testing it of course.

I have both versions of office installed and can launch any one of them without getting the above screenshots.

  3. This was really useful for me - I'm using Office 2007 and Office XP (2002) on the same PC running Windows Vista Home Premium.
Each time I switched between Word XP and Word 2007 I was getting this "Please wait while setup prepares the necessary files" which would take an age.

I did this the traditional way though- I opened the registry editor (regedit) and then navigated to the path as shown (starting at HKEY-Current User). I then added a DWORD entry of NoReReg with a value of 1 to the office 10 (2002/XP) and office 12 (2007) sub-branches.

    Many thanks!

  5. It is a very good fix. Actually I have installed office 2003 and office 2007(Excel) only.

Whenever office 2003 outlook receive a email, excel 2007 was trying to reinstall automatically.

Now the bug has fixed with your registry help.

Thank you very much. [Rajib Roy]
